January CAS Meeting

January 12 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

“George Ellery Hale. The Man, His Machines and His Disease

Zoom Presentation by Stacy “Chuck” Mills

George Ellery Hale was the most important astronomer of the early 20th century. His astrophysical discoveries regarding the sun would have merited a Nobel prize if astronomy had been recognized as a branch of physics at the time.  Hale was key to the funding and development of the four progressively most power telescopes of their time. These instruments fundamentally changed our understanding of the universe and put America at the forefront of astronomic research.   Hale suffered from a psychiatric condition that may have occasionally benefited him but ultimately led to his demise. This talk will focus on how each of these four telescopes came to be and the man who made it happen.

Dave Giltinan will continue his 10 minute topic series with “The Search for Dark Energy in the Coming Decade”
